Up and Out

How to get Kate and Zack dressed and outside before 8:30am?

SNOW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

It's going to get warmer this afternoon, so I told them last night that if they wanted to get any sledding in, they would have to go outside early. Lo and behold, they were dressed and out before breakfast.

I love this kind of snow. It looked pretty coming down, didn't need to be shovelled and should be gone by tonight.

Katie needs new boots and snow pants. Really thought we'd get another winder out of the boots, but we've been using the snow pants since pre-school so I can't complain about those!

Great Movie

We just saw "Night at the Museum."

Great movie! It's like this move was made for homeschoolers. It's about a night watchman at the Natural History Museum in NYC. It was nice to see the museum, especially since I was just telling the kids all about the Egypt exhibit. We all enjoyed it and I'm glad we changed our plans from seeing Happlily N'ever After, which I learned was getting very poor reviews and would not have been nearly as good as this one.

All the exhibits come to life at night and the hero needs to brush up on his history in order to figure out how to keep everyone under control. The first exhibit that comes to life makes you feel like it might get scary but quickly reveals its cute outcome.

It was the perfect way to spend a rainy afternoon. But, the price was a killer. $30 for the four of us--and that was the matinee price!

That and dinner at IHOP made it a $60 outing for us. It really was a good movie to see on the big screen, but movies just shouldn't be that expensive!

MLK Day today. Not sure what to do with ourselves today. Already noon and we've just been hanging around. Going to surf around and see if there's anything interesting to do.

Hitting the Books

The cold weather is here, but no snow much to the disappointment of K&Z.

Winter means more group field trips (through REACH and another new local group) and more pen and pencil work.

Lately we've been working on cursive. We're using "Handwriting without Tears" and so far like it very much. It helps that there is no real rush about learning cursive, that the kids want to learn it and that my expectations are incredibly low. We do not have a family history of great penmanship, so legible is great!

We are reading more regularly at bedtime, with the early nights. In the middle of "The Dawn Treader" right now. It's our third Narnia book as we are reading them in the order written rather than in chronological order.

Math work has tremulously (on my part) begun again. In light of last year's freak out, we are going to do one page a week from the curriculum and use the computer games, board games and real life to fill out the rest of the week.

I also want to work in at least one science experiment a week, but haven't done that yet. Katie has been getting a good deal of science at Brownies, but Zack is feeling the lack of it in his work.

In other interests, Zack is all martial arts all the time and is giving his new punching bag regular beatings. Katie is using her new American Girl art set to learn more about colors and enjoying the paper dolls that also came with that kit.

I have been mesmerized by the new slideshow screen saver feature on my new computer. It plays random photos from my files for about 25 minutes and it's wonderful but is eating my time up like crazy!

Pete is currently on his way home from Provo.

And that's us today. Pete's on the phone, so I'm off!
